Quackin' in Quarantine

Project introduction

Our project is the perfect place for those stuck in quarantine to find COVID-19 friendly activities, CDC twitter updates, and see where and how to support their local hospitals.

Issue/Inspiration

Our concept was thought up during quarantine, hoping to find something both interesting and helpful to people stuck at home.

What it does

The website has multiple features such as a CDC page where users can look at the CDC twitter feed for updates about the coronavirus. It also includes an activities page where users can explore different quarantine friendly activities such as using Google Arts and Culture to explore different places. Finally we created a map of hospitals accepting PPE. This is meant to be a place where hospitals can log in and edit what they need.

How did your project evolve with the support of the COVID-19 hackathon fund by Google Cloud?

We did not end up using the google credit as we didn’t end up needing them. Our project just needed time and work.

How you built it

We used HTML, CSS and javascript to make the main website. For the CDC page we added a twitter API for constant updates. We added functionality by using a google maps api and connecting it to the firebase realtime database. To secure the process we also used firebase authorization.

Challenges you ran into

There were many challenges when implementing the google maps api and connecting it to the database. The directions that were on the internet tended to be outdated and error filled so there was a lot of trial and error and editing until we were able to make it work. Neither of us had a lot of experience with javascript, so we were learning on the way.

Accomplishments you are proud of

We are very proud of getting the maps api connected to a realtime database. It took a long time and was very frustrating but we succeeded in the end.

What you learned

We both learned how to implement javascript and the ins and out of realtime database. We also learned how to implement firebase authentication. Sophie, who had never worked with html or css before was able to find a base understanding of both.

What’s next for your project

We would like to make the website more responsive as it is currently only fitted for a laptop. Project introduction:Our project is the perfect place for those stuck in quarantine to find COVID-19 friendly activities, CDC twitter updates, and see where and how to support their local hospitals.
