30 min - Eli Gladstone & Eric Silverberg

Hi! Eric and Eli, here! We started Speaker Labs in 2016 so that we could focus all of our time and effort around two of the things we value most: communication and teaching. We both began our careers as Faculty Members at the Ivey Business School, where we were fortunate enough to lecture packed classrooms every day. It was during that time when we fell in love...not with each other (although we are best friends) - but with teaching. Helping others develop became a life passion for us. After teaching, we took a few years to explore the world of tech start-ups (we are millennials after-all) and we saw how communication is pervasive, not only in the classroom, but in all areas of business. It was clear that expressing ideas confidently and clearly was a common challenge, and we gravitated towards helping other over that all-too-common hurdle. Then we took a leap. A leap that turned our passions into a company. Enter Speaker Labs.

Google supports our group with a big 👍👍, now what? Finding Sponsors/Speakers

We have all been to top notch, super high quality presentations by a Googler and been lavished by swag and food, all in a gorgeous space. This may be part of what we were dreaming when we signed up to be a GDG Organizer. When you are back home, with no budget, or space, or speaker available, with Google Corporate saying, "Yeah! Do that thing!" How do you move from your dream 5-star event to the reality of making _something_ happen? We will discuss best ideas of finding a sponsor for your events, and finding a good speaker as well. Maybe even what's the best food (Pizza or Hoagies or Lobster Rolls).

Nailing the Tech Interview

Like most interviews, the technical interview begins with the resume, and ends with the post-interview follow up. However, the technical interview includes more than just reviewing your resume, going over your credentials, and discussing projects and achievements. The technical interview involves more than the behavioral portion and assuring your personality and style are a good fit. It also involves demonstrating that your problem solving skills are superior to those of other candidates. This talk will cover how to overcome the challenges of the technical interview, and impress your potential employer. It will also include tips and tricks from the initial screening phase through the in person interview as well as the post-interview follow up.

Best Practices for Increasing Event Attendees

One of the main challenges of having a successful event/meetup series is how to get a good number of attendees show up time and time again. After being a part of the SF Android GDG meetup for 9 years, we have learned some best practices for getting great attendance on a regular (sometimes monthly) basis. Then suddenly with the flood of content on youtube and more meetups in San Francisco, attendance dropped. We went back to the drawing board, created new processes, and are back to an average 80 attendees per event. In this talk I will walk through what worked well for us... Getting venues/sponsors, booking A+ speakers, content, making your events more interactive, etc.
