Durham University Computer Science Department are delighted to welcome UK tech pioneer Dame Stephanie “Steve” Shirley to speak at the inaugural Steve Shirley annual lecture sponsored by Google. Dame Stephanie is a child refugee, turned successful IT entrepreneur turned ardent 
philanthropist who’s TED talk “Why do ambitious women have flat heads?” has been viewed more than 2 million times.

In the 1950s Dame Stephanie set up FInternational a pioneering software house in the UK which employed almost exclusively women, many working from home. FInternational produced cutting edge software for several industries including the Concorde Black Box flight recorder. Dame Stephanie sold FInternational in the 1970s becoming a major UK philanthropist funding the Oxford Internet Institute amongst other ventures.

Dame Stephanie has written a book about her life “Let it Go” which is currently being made into a Hollywood film and will share some of her life story with us on the night. Joining Steve will be Professor Sue Black and Professor Alexandra Cristea from Durham University Computer Science department and Google engineer Laura Lowenthal.
