Celebrating Olaudah Equiano

Following on from the incredible record breaking success of Mary Seacole Doodle from Black History Month 2016, we are so proud to celebrate the 272nd birthday of Olaudah Equiano on October 16th. Born in Nigeria and at around age 11 was sold into slavery, traded and endured passage to Barbados and Virginia.

As a freed man, Olaudah supported the British movement to end slave trade. His autobiography published in 1789, along with his role as the first political activist within Britains's African community, were considered highly influential in drawing of the Slave Trade Act 1807, which ended the African trade for Britain and its colonies.
