Transition between HCI in academia and UX Research in the industry

Tuesday, May 3rd - 12:30pm - 1:10 pm CST
Exhibit Hall J
*Please note this talk has been rescheduled and will be taking place on TUESDAY MAY 3rd at 12:30 PM CST*

The talk aims to give an introduction of what careers as user experience researchers at Google might look like, how to prepare for industry positions while attaining academic goals, and our personal experiences around career growth. In addition, we discuss how academic training can be advantageous in industry roles, offer key questions to ask yourself when considering a transition, and detail some common challenges that academics face. Three Google researchers with backgrounds in HCI will share their personal experiences of how they became UX Researchers at Google, and how they adapted to and thrived in their new roles, including lessons learned during the job search and useful resources they encountered as they transitioned out of their PhD program. This session will close with a Q&A period for CHI attendees to help students understand the opportunities available in industry and how they can best prepare for industry roles.

I am a UX Researcher at Google on the Business Messages team, where I conduct research on how business can more effectively communicate with consumers. Previously, I was on the Google Messages and Cloud Customer Experience teams. I received my PhD from University of Michigan School of Information (advised by Nicole Ellison). For my PhD, I conducted research how people can use communication technologies, particularly social media, to better support their interpersonal relationships. I am a mixed methods researcher and employ a range of methods including surveys, in-depth interviews, experiments, and focus groups. My research has appeared in peer-reviewed venues such as Information, Communication, and Society; CHI; and Annual Review of Psychology.
