Yasmine Evjen
Design Advocate, Google
From a high level, Material Design can be perceived as a pyramid of interaction mechanics, patterns, conventions, and styled components, but the foundational principles that permeate each component subtly influence how a user experiences your app. This session will unpack the principles that work at a low level to make Material Design a strong system and how they lay the groundwork for great user experiences.
Yasmine Evjen is a Design Advocate at Google; helping other designers create human-centered experiences on Google's platforms. Proponent of pen before pixel, she uses the Google Design Sprint methodology to help teams co-create, test, and build successful products. Prior to Google, she led user experience design efforts to build cross-platform products for start-ups, non-profits, and large corporations. Highlighted on Computer World's Android Experts as "the person behind one of Android's most powerful voices,” Yasmine bridges the gap between design and technology to bring stories to life.

As designers we often think we struggle with getting our ideas heard and accepted, when the real issue is often centered around problem definition. In this session, participants will learn how to think about and define problems using a combination of both familiar and new methodologies (JBTD, Kano model, etc.) in a way that facilitates real solutions.

Our perceptions of the world are built on multiple senses. Applying multi-sensory design to all the touchpoints in a user journey produces a more complete, and ultimately better user experience. Development of Voice User Interfaces (VUI) has made it possible for us to embed voice-based interactions through natural human language into our products or services. In this talk, we will discuss how to design a multi-sensory user journey to facilitate users achieving their goals, by interacting with not only graphic interfaces, but also voice interfaces.
Hannah is a User Experience Designer on the Google Assistant team. She is focusing on crafting and building the functionality of Assistant user journeys. Previously, she was an Interaction Designer for Google Payments. Prior to Google, Hannah worked for Oracle and Saba solving enterprise design problems. During the 2008 Beijing Olympics she was a video producer for Tencent, the creator of WeChat. Hannah earned a master’s degree in Media, Arts and Science from Arizona State University, and a bachelor’s degree in Digital Media from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. She researched social networks and information visualizations while at Arizona State University and Peking University.

Smartphones and mobile devices are dominating the world, slowly displacing desktop PCs. A person checks their mobile on average 150 times a day, and for every baby that is born, 5 smartphones are activated. Despite the rapid growth and adoption of mobile platforms, errors and limitations in design often create obstacles in their usability. In this talk we will review methods, tools and techniques to help people who create technology to develop and design mobile user experiences that are extraordinary and memorable.
