Guidelines for A/B testing

Step 1

Step 1

Start by setting up and implementing the tool that you will test the site with. Google Optimize is a free and easy to use tool for testing your site. See here for more info.

Step 2

Step 2

Whichever tool you do decide to use, make sure that you check for flickering or FOOC (Flash of Original Content) when you begin testing.

Step 3

Step 3

For valuable insights, ensure that you’re tracking your tests with an analytics tool like Google Analytics as well.

Step 4

Step 4

Aim to have three wireframes for resolving any issue on a page. The more options you have the less likely you’ll become attached to only one solution.

Step 5

Step 5

Keep running your tests until they return a clear winner.

Step 6

Step 6

Don’t peak! Results will vary at the beginning so avoid peaking too soon and too often — it will make you biased. And finally — keep going. On average, only one out of three tests will be a winner so don’t get discouraged.
